About the Distributed Nursery
A network of neighborhood growers, not a centralized institution.
What It Is
The Holon Distributed Nursery is a peer-to-peer network where community members propagate, grow, and share native plants adapted to our regional ecotypes. Instead of relying on industrial nurseries that source from unknown origins, we grow locally-adapted seed stock and connect growers directly with stewards.
Every plant in the network is verified for native status and ecotype appropriateness. Our marketplace allows buying, trading, and giftingβcreating economic and social relationships around plant stewardship.
Why It Matters
- β Local Ecotypes: Plants adapted to our climate, soil, and rainfall
- β Bypass Industrial Markup: Direct from grower to steward
- β Community Relationships: Build connections through shared plant care
- β Economic Resilience: Money stays in the community
- β Verified Quality: Every listing meets our standards
How to Get Plants
Our community offers flexible ways to share and receive native plants. Each listing shows which options the steward offers.
Pickup
The steward prepares your plants (digs, pots, or bags them) and you collect them at the listed location during the available hours. This is the most common and straightforward option.
You-Dig (Self-Harvest)
Visit the steward's garden and dig the plants yourself. This is ideal when stewards want to share plants but don't have time to dig them up. You choose the exact specimens you want, and same-day transplanting means better survival rates.
- Saves the steward time — no digging, potting, or delivering
- You pick the healthiest specimens directly
- Plants transplanted same-day have higher survival rates
- Builds community connections through shared garden visits
- Strengthens the stewardship network by inviting others into the ecosystem
Meet at a Location
Arrange to meet the steward at a public place like a park, coffee shop, or community center. Great for people who prefer not to share their home address, or when the exchange location is more convenient for both parties.
Available at Event
The plant will be available at an upcoming community event, plant swap, or workshop. Check the Events section below to find the next opportunity. No coordination needed — just show up.
Delivery
Some stewards offer to deliver plants to your home within a certain radius. Delivery may be free or carry a small fee to cover gas and time. Check the listing for details about range and cost.
Ship / Mail
Seeds, cuttings, and small items can be shipped via USPS or other carriers. Ideal for connecting with growers outside your immediate neighborhood. Shipping costs and timelines vary by steward.
🪄 You-Dig Visitor Etiquette
Before You Visit
Read all conditions on the listing carefully. Confirm your visit with the steward if required. Bring your own tools unless stated otherwise. Wear closed-toe shoes, gloves, and clothing appropriate for garden work. Bring containers or bags to transport your plants.
While on the Property
Stay in the designated area. Only dig the plants listed — everything else is off-limits unless the steward says otherwise. Backfill all holes and leave the area tidy. If children or pets are with you, follow the steward's policy. Be mindful of underground utilities — don't dig deeper than necessary.
After Your Visit
Thank the steward and leave a review in the Trust Portal. Transplant your new plants as soon as possible for the best survival rate. Share your experience with the community and consider listing your own surplus plants to keep the cycle going.
Safety note: All garden visits are at your own risk. Wear protective equipment and be aware of your surroundings. Holon Gardens does not carry liability insurance for private property visits. Review the steward's waiver requirements and the Terms of Service before visiting.
